1 hour and 15 minute tour (plus travel) in addition to three 45-90 minute in-school lessons taught by classroom and art teachers.
Combo of In-School Workshop & Offsite Tour Tour is flanked by pre- and post-museum visit lesson plans implemented by the classroom and art teachers. Curricula and posters of artworks used in the lesson plans provided by the museum.

The museum will provide hard-copies of the Teacher Curriculum Resource which includes fully outlined lesson plans, student worksheets, and additional content for classroom enrichment. Additional supplies include a CD of program images as well as posters of the program images.

Teachers will receive a Teacher Discovery Pass, a one-time free pass to explore the museum to prepare for their students" upcoming tour and plan curricular connections.

Limited free busing is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Chart paper or a chalk, white, or SMART board; chalk or markers (dry erase or standard); computer, projector, and projection screen or equivalent; notebook and sketch paper; student name tags (tour); and pencils or eraseable pens. Teachers will need to make photocopies of the provided student worksheets. Grade 3: colored pencils, crayons, or markers; and comic strips or graphic novels. Grade 4: masking tape, stiff paper, and art supplies of your choice. Grade 5: art supplies of your choice.

Art and Writing is an upper elementary art and literacy
program that connects the visual and language arts.
In this program, students learn how to "read" a work
of art through close looking and thoughtful analysis.
The rich array of accompanying writing activities
are designed to inspire and strengthen student writing
skills.

Each grade level unit focuses on one form of writing:

Grade 3: Tell Me a Story (narrative)
Grade 4: Detail Detectives (descriptive)
Grade 5: Compare and Contrast (expository)

The program consists of four components per grade-level unit:

1. Introductory classroom lesson (taught by classroom teacher)
2. Art and Writing: Curriculum Extension Tour at the museum (taught by museum docents)
3. Art-making activity (taught by art teacher)
4. Closing classroom lesson (taught by classroom teacher)

Reservations must be made at least three weeks in advance of desired visit. All school visits must have a confirmed appointment.

Teachers receive the Teacher Curriculum Resource, USB of program images, and posters of program images upon booking their Art and Writing: Curriculum Extension Tour. Please be sure to specify that you will be utilizing the curriculum materials when booking. Materials will be mailed to participating teachers.

The Wadsworth Atheneum encourages parent participation and seeks opportunities for parents to act as chaperones during tours at the museum. Chaperones accompany students in the galleries while monitoring the behavior of students and must remain with students at all times. There is no additional cost for chaperones. Chaperone guidelines are provided by the museum upon booking.

Grade 3

Grade 3: Writing Standards: Text Types and Purposes #3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. A Establish a situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally. B. Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations.
Grade 3: Speaking and Listening Standards: Comprehension and Collaboration #1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others" ideas and expressing their own clearly. C. Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others. D. Explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.
Grade 3: Visual Arts: Creating: Anchor Standard 3: Refine and complete artistic work. A. Elaborate visual information by adding details in an artwork to enhance emerging meaning.
Grade 3: Visual Arts: Responding: Anchor Standard 7: Perceive and analyze artistic work. 2A. Determine messages communicated by an image.

Grade 4

Grade 4: Writing Standards: Research to Build and Present Knowledge #9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. A. Apply grade 4 Reading standards to literature (e.g., "Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., a character"s thoughts, words, or actions]." ).
Grade 4: Speaking and Listening Standards: Comprehension and Collaboration #1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others" ideas and expressing their own clearly. C. Pose and respond to specific questions to clarify or follow up on information, and make comments that contribute to the discussion and link to the remarks of others.

Apply grade 5 Reading standards to literature (e.g., "Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or a drama, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., how characters interact]" ).
