Tony will provide all professional musical instruments necessary for the students to have a hands-on experience. (Music instruments include: djembes, gongs, drums, bells, balafon, bongos, dun-dun drums, rattles, etc. and a small sound system for the workshops).

Science of Sound
Tony Vacca's high-energy, hands-on percussion workshop uses music and instruments to provide physical, visual and auditory cues to demonstrate that sound is energy. Students of all learning styles will enjoy these opportunities to understand and experience science concepts in a new way.

Together we will learn and perform a rhythm-song by using call-and-response techniques. First time players and professional drummers will each have a chance to use and challenge their skills. All instruments are provided.

After our initial hands-on experience, Tony returns to build on the students' performance experience. Tony brings to life the scientific concepts of Energy Transfer and Transformation by experimenting with and demonstrating sound waves, energy and vibration with a variety of instruments. We will use a instruments made of different materials to experiment with loudness (volume) and high/low tones (pitch). Students will have an opportunity to generate and "feel" and "see" the vibrations that are generated.

Finally, we will reflect on how to apply this information in your classroom.

THIS PROGRAM INVOLVES LOTS OF DRUMS AND WILL BE LOUD.
We would gladly welcome 1-2 volunteers before school or after school to help with the load-in and load-out. We certainly welcome any parents/guardians who are or aren't musicians who would like to join in during the workshop(s). I would think 1-2 per workshop would be best. Room mothers or fathers, uncles, etc. Please call.

Grade 1

Grade 1: Waves: Light and Sound1-PS4-1 . Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. PS4.A: Wave Properties: Sound can make matter vibrate, and vibrating matter can make sound. (1-PS4-1)
Grade 1: MUSIC PERFORMING: Anchor Standard #6: Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work. MU: Pr6.1.1a: with limited guidance perform music for a specific purpose with expression.

Grade 4

Grade 4 ENERGY: 4-PS3-2. Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents. PS3.B: Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer: Energy is present whenever there are moving objects, sound, light, or heat. When objects collide, energy can be transferred from one object to another, thereby changing their motion. In such collisions, some energy is typically also transferred to the surrounding air; as a result, the air gets heated and sound is produced. (4-PS3-2),(4-PS3-3) Light also transfers energy from place to place. (4-PS3-2) Energy can also be transferred from place to place by electric currents, which can then be used locally to produce motion, sound, heat, or light. The currents may have been produced to begin with by transforming the energy of motion into electrical energy. (4-PS3-2),(4-PS3-4)
