I CAN create a comics image with collage. I CAN combine and organize words and images to communicate my idea. I CAN use three elements from the comic arts to create meaning.
In Comics + Collage = Connections students engage with collage materials while they are challenged to go outside their comfort zones to make new connections and communicate their ideas in language. Students creatively combine, design, and organize words and images to express themselves to the classroom audience. Some students can present their work to the class to share the connection of their images and get feedback from their peers. Students can also trade images with each other and work together to build a connection. This fun and engaging program uses the multiple intelligences to teach visual art standards while building literacy skills through exploration and discovery. Content, techniques and vocabulary are adjusted and stepped up for grade level complexity. This workshop can be adjusted to address specific areas of concern, for examples a topic such as bullying, or a literacy concerns such as point-of-view, transition, sequencing.
Teachers have called this program "engaging," "fun," they say "students worked hard," and that the process "is easily transferable to other curriculum areas. Over and over classroom teachers say, "I'll definitely use this again!"
