I CAN demonstrate hula and yoga postures using breath control, concentration, focus, balance, and strength.

I CAN pay attention to my breath on purpose, and imagine my breath filling my lungs, so that I breath slower and deeper- whenever I feel tired or sluggish, when I feel angry or upset - or when I feel nervous, tense or stressed.

I CAN understand that my breath affects my emotions and the way that I think.

I CAN explain that my emotions and the way that I think affects my actions and behavior.

I CAN apply different breathing exercises when I am having problems focusing or concentrating, when I am taking a test, when I am nervous in class or in school, or, when I am having difficulty in expressing myself, or trying to do a physical activity.

I CAN slow down, and think before I act

I CAN be responsible for my actions because I understand that they affect other people and my environment responsible for my actions

I CAN empower myself by choosing positive thinking actions and behavior for better health, to be a better friend, student, and family member.

I CAN handle challenges with a positive attitude.

I CAN communicate my thoughts and feelings in a positive way.
Hula and yoga are ancient practices rooted in principles of right living and living right with others to establish peaceful and harmonious lives. The Hawaiian practice of hula is comprised of mindful dance movements that tell stories by using imagery, visualization, and embodying the elements of nature. Mindful movements and mindfulness meditation provide students with basic strategies for self-regulation and body awareness.

Students perform hula movements in which they embody characteristics of an island to experience the elements of nature from a different perspective. This exercise reinforces how the environment contributes to their daily lives. Understanding concepts of connectivity, students learn that because they are a part of something larger than themselves, their actions, and unique contributions matter.

Concepts of connectivity are also applied to their physical health and well-being. Through the practice of mindful movements and yoga, students learn the connection between the breath, mind, and body, for alignment, stability, balance, focus, concentration, and optimal health. With body awareness they become more conscious of their posture, muscles, joints, and spinal health, for the prevention of injuries or potential chronic pain.

Mindfulness and honoring the Spirit of Aloha are both practices and ways of being. The word Aloha is more than a greeting. Aloha means love, kindness, caring, compassion, and respect; therefore, this Hawaiian moral code of conduct is being acknowledged whenever one is greeted with this special word.

Another important element in Hawaiian society is the principle of treating all others as if they are family and putting the needs of others before their own. Hawaii"s state motto is: "The life of the land is preserved in righteousness." In this program students learn about "right living" through the Spirit of Aloha.
