I can make an informed prediction about what will happen in a book before I read.

I can put myself in a character's shoes and imagine how he/she might feel.

I can identify a main theme of the book we explored this week.

The Connections program brings a Hartford Stage teaching artist into the classroom to explore a piece of literature. Connections is a pre-reading residency; throughout the week, the class will explore the characters, plot, themes and suspense points of the chosen piece of literature using theatre techniques such as tableau, pantomime, role-play, dialogue, monologue, text analysis and storytelling - all before reading the book. At the end of the week, each student will receive their own copy of the book to keep and read.
"Just Juice" by Karen Hesse addresses themes of family, literacy and poverty. The enduring understanding of the residency is: "There is no one way to be smart. Everyone has their own strengths."
