I can connect words and images to tell a short linear story.

I can understand how words and images can complement, contrast and interact with each other.

I can create a short working draft of a picture book.
Students will see the process of creating a picture book, then be guided to use that knowledge to create their own first draft of a story.

Day 1: The visiting artist will read a grade appropriate picture book. Then show the students the multiple drafts and the extensive editing process that lead to the final story. The class and artist will work together to write and illustrate a collaborative story.

Day 2: During the second visit students will use the collaborative story as a rough draft and starting point to create their own version of the story.

During this process I would like the teacher to help me focus the children on the project of creating the story. I encourage the teacher to participate and collaborate by introducing ideas and suggestions that can connect what we are creating with what the students are currently learning in the classroom.
