Large easel (dry board or with large sheets of paper), markers for writing ideas, "equity sticks" with students' names written on them to pick who to call on.
A clear space for students to move in a circle, a group facing a leader, or facing each other in lines. Depending on the size of the group, this could be either a classroom with desks pushed to one side, or a gym or cafetorium.
1. I CAN step and move in time to music. 2. I CAN sing loud or soft, fast or slow. 3. I CAN think of new words for characters, objects or actions in singing games. 4. I CAN demonstrate understanding of words by modeling them in tone and movement (sleepy, scared, etc.) 5. I CAN have fun being creative with music and movement.
A high-spirited way for students to absorb and embody language arts through traditional songs and movement! From "do the camel walk" to "round-dee-doo-bop," students will sing and "step it down" in circles, paired up in facing lines, or spread out in front of the leader. Students gleefully learn new vocabulary as they act out the motions and images they"re singing about, creating new ideas to add to the games. They"ll also play with different vocal expressions we name (scared, sleepy, excited, robot voice, etc.) and changes in tempo, volume and pitch. In the process, they'll develop the transferable skill of Critical Thinking and Creativity as they determine these choices, such as what action word to act out for a way to go down a river. In addition, students will learn Collaboration as they contribute ideas for different aspects of each sequence. Younger students will learn circle games with simple sequences, while older students will learn games with more steps and different formations. Accessible and engaging for a wide range of learning styles and abilities, this program is highly suitable for special needs students and inclusion.
Caregivers are welcome to participate in the singing games. In some instances with large groups, I may divide the group into smaller groups so that more children can have turns a particular game. Caregivers could join the groups I'm not part of to help students understand the game and take turns.
